Batgirl comic writer Cameron Stewart has been accused of grooming model Aviva Mai while she was a teenager.

In a series of tweets yesterday, Mai describes her grooming experience before eventually naming Stewart as her abuser.

“Hey. That post about being groomed as a teenager? I’m talking about Cameron Stewart. The comic book artist. We met when I was 16 and he was in his 30s. Maybe 32? It was 2009,” she wrote.

“We flirted by text and went on one date. In 2009. When I was 16. We stayed “friends” for a long time after that and he’d sometimes text to say that he was sad he missed his chance to date me. A couple really uncomfortable times.

“Took me a long time to realize what had actually happened, what he was doing, and that we were never actually friends.

“I’m only posting this because he’s worked on a lot of comics directly aimed at young girls and women, and I want them to know what kind of person he is.”

Cartoonist and writer Kate Keth backed up the model and artist, tweeting her support and coming forward with her own experience of Stewart grooming her.

“I still have the drawing of Death he drew me on a piece of hotel stationary. I was 19. He was 32,” she wrote.

Fellow actress Natasha Negovanlis responded to both women by saying she had a similar story, and while she stood in solidarity she was not prepared to share the details publicly.

Since Mai came forward, a number of women involved in the comics community have expressed their knowledge of Stewart’s behaviour, and Mai has encouraged those drawn to the conversation to donate to non-profits that help women, including those for women of colour and trans people.

“I’ve been friends with folks in the Toronto comics community for a decade. It was widely known that Cameron Stewart was a predator, and he’d basically been chased out of town after pissing off too many people. I’ve warned women away from him, multiple times,” tweeted convention organiser Andrea Demonakos.

Keth has since tweeted her experience in more detail, similar to Mai’s thread.

“So I went to sleep thinking about what happened with Cameron many many years ago and just wanted to pin down his particular brand of predatory behaviour because it’s NOT uncommon,” she wrote this morning.

“CS did not groom me for months, but I knew other people he did it to. And I’ve been in Aviva’s situation with different men. It’s so common. Men REALLY need to start checking each other and calling this out bc they won’t listen to US.

“Because I know that with CS, all the older comics guys, all the men in comics in Toronto, they ALL know. They knew. Maybe not about the 16 year olds, but the 18s. The 21s. From a 35+yo man. “Oh, that rascal! Incorrigible!” Yeah. Some of that blood’s on your hands, fellas.”

Since the claims began surfacing online, Stewart has switched his Twitter to private.
